Deep inside people are very soft, sensitive and tender. Sharing feelings exposes the deep and vulnerable parts of their tender self. Opening up makes them vulnerable.

In the past when people were trusting and naive they opened up easily and shared their feelings, ideas, opinions, stories.

That’s when the encountered the critisism, ridicule, disapproval, rejection. The resulting emotional trauma forced them to seek refuge in silence. They shut the doors to their inner feelings. They learnt to keep their feelings to themselves. They found refuge in the saying, “silence is golden”.

They go into their shell of safety where no one ever knows how they feel. They feel safe. They compromise with their need to communicate their deep emotions and feelings. They are rewarded for this silence with safety. This silence comes at the cost of their happiness.

Sometimes when they encounter a relationship where they feel safe and protected, slowly and gradually they open up. Testing the waters, they look out for a safe environment to open up. If they get the support to open up, all their unexpressed feeling emerge. All that was hidden in the dark cellars of the heart comes out in the open. It’s extremely liberating.

There is a feeling of relief and joy to release the pent up emotions. They feel free. Fears vanish and they can now connect to their deep hidden self. That was hiding under their mask of conformity. As their confidence increases they freely speak up. They act freely and do the things they always wanted to do.

It takes a lot of courage and strength to be open and vulnerable. Firm faith and belief of who you are and what your conviction and beliefs are provides you the strength to open up and share your feelings.

But since most people lack this strength its extremely difficult for them to open up. Strong people find it easy to open up. The weak struggle and long for some support before they open up and share their feelings. Till the knight in shining armor arrives they struggle in their hearts to let go the burden of suppressed feeling and emotions.
